Preparation and Characterization of MWCNTs-Chitosan Nanocomposite Membrane for Wastewater Treatment

Abstract : Nanocomposite membrane is one of the latest technologies in wastewater treatment. The composite between multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with organic material can promise an excellent function in separation of methylene blue in water. In this study, chitosan has been used to physically bind with MWCNTs to produce a thin layer membrane. The MWCNTs-Chitosan nanocomposite membrane was prepared using a dispersion method in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The dispersion solution was prepared and sonicated using ultra-sonification for 30 minutes before filtered with vacuum filtration. The nanocomposite membrane was characterized to analyse its microscopy and thickness. Result shows that the optimum ratio to prepare the composite is 10:5:2 for DMSO: MWCNTs: Chitosan respectively. FESEM image showed that MWCNTs and chitosan was homogeneously spread on the surface. Application onto contaminated water shows that the membrane can filter almost 80% of the methylene blue from the water.
