Structural Properties of Graphene Coated on Silicon Nanowires by Mechanical Exfoliation

Abstract : Silicon Nanowires (SiNWs) has been used as graphene synthesis template as the texture substrate enhance light harvesting in device application comparing to planar substrate. In this research, graphene was deposited onto SiNWs by using mechanical exfoliation by using highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). SiNWs arrays are formed using silver nanoparticle-assisted chemical etching with different angle of formation 0o, 45o, 90o, 135o and 180o. From Raman spectroscopy, graphene were successfully transferred on SiNWs based on the existence of D-band 1350 cm-1, G-band 1580 cm-1and 2D-band 2726 cm-1. Structural analysis shows that sample SiNWs growth at 0o substrate position and coated with graphene layer has the larger value of I2D/IG at 0.409 and has less defects shown at its lowest D-band Raman shift value of 1347.10 cm-1. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) images shows the existence of graphene flakes with different morphology on silicon nanowires formed at different angle respectively. EDX analysis shows sample SiNWs formed at 0o obtained the highest percentage of carbon element at 70.87%.
