Abstract : The corrosion behavior of Sn-9Zn and Sn-37Pb solders were compared by means of potentiodynamic polarization in 1 M hydrochloric acid solution. Two dissolution peaks were observed for Sn-9Zn reveals that preferential dissolution process was dominant during polarization, compared with Sn-37Pb. Post-corrosion analyses show that porous and poor distribution of passivation film made of different phase of corrosion products completely replaced the original microstructures of Sn-9Zn and Sn-37Pb. This shows that continuous protection offered by the presence of corrosion product is insufficient to stop further corrosion attack.
