The Effect of Annealing on Ferroelectric Properties of Copolymer P(VDF-TrFE)

Abstract : This work reports the effect of annealing in ferroelectric properties of copolymer polyvinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene, P(VDF-TrFE) films. P(VDF-TrFE) solutions of 5 wt% were pipetted on glass substrate via spin coating method and thermally annealed at temperatures between 80°C and 140°C in order to increase their crystallinity. The increment is due to the change of dipoles alignment inside the materials. Greater align dipoles in the films will induce greater ferroelectricity which relies on a remnant polarization as a characteristic parameter. It was found that the copolymer P(VDF-TrFE) films with annealing temperature at 100°C shows the highest percentage of crystallinity (75.3 %) and remnant polarization (76.7 mC/m2) with the most dominant ferroelectric β phase which correspond to the all trans (TTTT) molecular chain alignment. The characteristics observed are the optimal annealed films suitable for sensors and energy harvesting application.
