Abstract : Proton conducting polymer electrolytes based on blend polymer using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and poly acrylo nitrile (PAN) doped with ammonium nitrate have been prepared by solution casting method. X-ray Diffraction pattern of the 92.5PVA:7.5PAN and NH4NO3 doped 92.5PVA:7.5PAN polymer electrolyte confirms the amorphous nature. The complex formation between the blend polymer and the salt has been confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The highest conductivity at 303 K has been found to be 1.8 x 10-3 S cm-1 for 15 mol % NH4NO3 doped 92.5PVA:7.5PAN system. The linear variation of the proton conductivity of the polymer electrolytes with increasing temperature suggests the Arrhenius type thermally activated process. The activation energy calculated from the Arrhenius plot varies from 0.16 to 0.32 eV. 1H nuclear magnetic study made on blend polymer using PVA and PAN doped with ammonium nitrate reveals that the conducting species is protons. The ionic transference number has been estimated by Wagner’s polarization method.
